In the current economic climate, many architectural and engineering firms have shifted their focus away from municipalities to clients that have complex projects and the financial capacity to award large contracts. From a purely economic view, this is certainly understandable, as all companies are in business in order to make a profit and focusing on pursuits with the highest rate of return helps improve the bottom line. However, we believe that working with municipalities can be profitable with the right business model. We also share a sincere passion for making the communities where we live, work, learn and play a better place for our children. Municipalities and associated entities provide for our basic daily needs, including streets, water/sewer service, and public safety, as well as many other services that better the quality of life in our communities, like parks and libraries. Every citizen and business is affected by the municipality’s success or failure to meet these basic needs and the long-term health of a city depends on recruiting and retaining businesses and residents. While the demands on community leaders to address these issues continue to increase, funding and resources are tight and politicians continue in gridlock. No community can address these challenges alone. Cities need technical assistance, resource support and partnerships more than ever before, and as consultants, our professional responsibility is to identify critical needs in the marketplace and provide solutions. It is for this reason that we feel that municipalities are an extremely important client and cannot be overlooked. While others have focused elsewhere, we see a tremendous opportunity to leverage the relationships we have built, the technical knowledge we have learned from working with large, multidiscipline firms, and our personal passions for community level work to become part of the solution.
